The Press

Named for the hardest tree in the forest.

The grey ironbark carries deeply furrowed bark over some of the densest heartwood of any commercial timber on Earth. It was the wood colonial Australia built its bridges and wharves from - unglamorous, durable, load-bearing.

That is the editorial standard here: work built to carry weight. Every claim sourced, every argument load-tested, on subjects where speculation is cheap and rigour is rare.

The Author

Peter van Velzen

Peter van Velzen is a systems engineer and author based in Queensland, Australia. A career spent designing, integrating, and de-risking complex engineered systems shapes how he writes: assumptions declared up front, every claim sourced, and the boundary between evidence and inference kept explicit.

That discipline extends to how the books are made. He is the architect of The Author Engine, the governed human-and-AI production methodology behind every Ironbark Grange title - an approach documented first-hand in Brilliant Strangers.

He writes on the questions engineering ultimately runs into: what artificial minds are becoming, whether we are alone, and what both demand of human judgement. He publishes essays between the books at Threshold Signals.
